Terrorists’ Hideout Challenged Drone Surveillance

Major General Chinedu Nnebeufe, GOC of 2 Division, Nigerian Army Headquarters, shared insights on the rescue. He revealed that the terrorists hid in a thick forest, which made drone operations ineffective. He said, “We opted to use ground operation to rescue the abducted schoolchildren because the aircraft and drones couldn’t locate them. If you’re under that place, you can’t even see rays of sunlight.”

Ground Operation Led to Soldier Casualties

During the rescue, the military faced losses. The General stated, “During one of the operations, we lost two soldiers, and some others were wounded. One of them has a broken arm due to a gunshot wound.” He then took over the operation with added support. Even, the terrain of the criminal hideout was a difficult one. It was a perfect for them as there are lots of thick forest, hence hindering proper surveillances.

Collaborative Efforts from Multiple Security Agencies

Major General Nnebeufe highlighted crucial assistance from various forces. “We had assistance from NSA Nuhu Ribadu, who sent in the National Counter-terrorism unit. We also had Defence Headquarters special forces, Nigerian Police, DSS, Nigerian Airforce team from Kanji, and troops from Operation Savannah Shield from Kwara State,” he said. Local vigilantes and Amoteken also joined the efforts.

Complex Operation Spanned Over One Month

The rescue mission was complex and lengthy. The General explained, “The operation lasted for over a month. We focused on identifying the terrorist kingpins and started cutting off their logistics and informants at Old Oyo National Park and other parts of the country.”

Pressure on Terrorists from Nationwide Pursuit

Security forces extended their search beyond the forest. “We looked for other members of their team and families in Adamawa, Kano, and different parts of the country and got them. This put pressure on the terrorists,” Major General Nnebeufe said. Furthermore, he hinted that the rescue operation was a wholistic but complex one, as they deployed all necessary resources to achieve their goal.

Final Phase Blocked Terrorist Logistics Hub

The operation’s final phase targeted the terrorists’ supply lines. “We blocked their major logistics hub in Ashamu, which finally made them willingly release the schoolchildren and teachers unconditionally,” he confirmed.

The rescued victims were first taken to hospital for medical checks before they were handed over to the Oyo State Government for reunion with their families.

Focus on Ending Terrorist Activities in the Region

The General emphasized the mission’s broader goal. “It was not just about releasing them but seeing to the end of the terrorists operating in the region,” he concluded.

President Tinubu’s Message

Reacting to the successful operation, President Bola Tinubu praised the security agencies, saying the children and teachers were rescued “without the payment of ransom.” In addition, he praised the gallantry of the Nigerian military and other security agencies for their well-coordinated efforts in the rescue of the teachers and children.
