ADC Names Rotimi Amaechi as Atiku’s Vice Presidential Candidate

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) picked former Rivers State Governor and ex-minister of transportation Rotimi Amaechi as running mate to former vice president Atiku Abubakar. They will contest together in the 2027 presidential election. Consequently, Amaechi’s choice is seen in many quarters as a step in the right direction in the fight against the ruling party.

Consultation and Performance Guide Selection

The party said Amaechi’s selection followed extensive consultations. Hence, his emergence reflects his runner-up position in the ADC presidential primaries. His record in public service further supported the choice. However, in some quarters they see Amaechi as the more aggressive candidate, which may cause some future friction.

The announcement follows complaints over purported anomalies during a contentious presidential race that saw former vice president Atiku Abubakar emerge as the party’s flagbearer.

According to official results released on May 27, 2026, Abubakar received 1,846,370 votes, defeating Amaechi, who received 504,117 votes. Mohammed Hayatu-Deen, a businessman, came in third with 177,120 votes.

However, Amaechi and Hayatu-Deen both rejected the procedure and claimed manipulation and anomalies in the exercise’s conduct, which at first caused protests inside the party.

A Partnership Beyond Politics

ADC spokesperson Abdullahi described the ticket as more than a political alliance. He said, “The proposed partnership between His Excellency Atiku Abubakar and Rt. Hon. Rotimi Amaechi represents more than a political alliance; it is the coming together of two tested statesmen with the experience, national reach, and leadership capacity required to rescue Nigeria from its current challenges and reposition the country for a new era of prosperity, security, and inclusive development.”

Amaechi’s Extensive Political Experience

Amaechi served as Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly. In addition, he held office as a two-term Governor of Rivers State and minister of transportation. The party highlighted, “Few political leaders in Nigeria today possess such extensive and balanced experience across both the legislative and executive arms of government.” They added this experience will support the next ADC administration from day one.

Strengthening Regional and National Appeal

The ADC stated Amaechi’s influence in the South-South and Southern Nigeria will strengthen the ticket. This influence enhances the ticket’s national appeal. Moreover, the ADC is fighting hard to exploit the recent insecurity in the country to their advantage.

This ticket aims to restore confidence in government and accelerate national development. Furthermore, the ADC’s ticket believes they can solve the economic problems and insecurity of the country within a short time if given the opportunity.

The ADC leadership expressed confidence the partnership will energise their growing coalition. Furthermore, they believe it will inspire hope among Nigerians and provide necessary leadership. The goal is to build a stronger, safer, and more prosperous Nigeria. Hence, they are the most credible alternative among the lot.

Call for Support Ahead of 2027 Election

The ADC has called on party members, coalition partners, civil society groups, youth and women organisations, and Nigerians at large to support the campaign. Preparations for the 2027 general election have officially begun.

The Ruling Party APC Remains Unshaken

The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) reaffirms confidence in President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s leadership and policies. They emphasise their commitment to delivering economic growth, security, and development for all Nigerians. Ahead of the 2027 elections, APC assures supporters that they will focus on unity and progress, viewing the opposition’s ticket as a continuation of old politics.
