Historically, the airport opened for domestic travel in September 2009. However, Governor Udom Emmanuel renamed the facility in 2018 to honour Victor Attah. Subsequently, Minister Festus Keyamo inspected the site in late 2025. He praised the modern infrastructure and the 3,600-metre runway. Therefore, the airport now handles wide-body aircraft like the Boeing 777.
