How Mexico’s Most-Wanted Narco King Got Killed – Official

Introduction

The Crucial Role of Intelligence in Narco Capture

Tracking Mexico’s most-wanted narco requires precise intelligence and cooperation, as a girlfriend played a key role. Importantly, Nemesio Oseguera’s girlfriend, who closely accompanied the powerful leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel, helped authorities find him. In fact, he was ambushed in Tapalpa, a picturesque village of vacation homes, before the Mexican military killed him.

How the Military Gained Critical Information

Intelligence was obtained that his girlfriend was scheduled to have a romp with him soon. Hence, vital details about the narco’s location were unknowingly compromised. This intelligence led to focused military action.

Military Action

Mexican military intelligence agents, supported by the US military’s Northern Command, launched a full-fledged military operation against the gang. Thus, they acted when they learned that the woman in question planned a rendezvous with the drug lord in Tapalpa. For this reason, they swamped the area which is some 130 kilometres from Guadalajara, the capital of Jalisco state.

The Press Conference

At a press conference on Monday, Mexican Defence Secretary Ricardo Trevilla informed reporters that a trusted associate transported the woman. She is “one of the romantic partners of ‘El Mencho'” and has been moved to a home in Tapalpa.

According to Trevilla, she met with Oseguera on Saturday before departing his place. Consequently, she left him in the house with his security detail.

The special force of the National Guard immediately planned their offensive using both air and land manoeuvres.

The D-Day

“To keep the secret and thus retain the element of surprise,” the soldiers moved toward the region quietly. – Trevilla said.

After confirming Oseguera’s presence, they chose to raid the property because he was wanted for possession of firearms. His offences also include his involvement in organised crime.

A Deadly Operation
Trevilla stated that Oseguera carried an armament that comprised assault rifles and two rocket launchers, adding. Honestly, it was a pretty violent attack.”

The kingpin’s security escorts, known for opposing state authorities, previously employed these kinds of bazookas. They helped the drug trafficker avoid capture in 2015 by shooting down a military helicopter.

The Man Haunt

“El Mencho” didn’t have the same luck on Sunday. He and his close circle of guards fled and took cover in a forested area surrounding a complex of cabins. Eventually, soldiers surrounded him again and found him hiding in the undergrowth, the head of the military explained.

However, his gunmen managed to hit a military helicopter, forcing it to make an emergency landing at a nearby base.

Violence across the city

The Fierce Battle

In the midst of the gunfight, the soldiers wounded Oseguera alongside two of his escorts. Consequently, they airlifted all three to a hospital in Guadalajara, but they perished en route, Trevilla said. Sadly, over 70 people died in the attempt to capture Nemesio Oseguera, the drug king.

Violence across the city

Oseguera’s Corpse

Authorities transported the bodies by aeroplane to Mexico City and handed them over to the General Prosecutor’s Office. Security Secretary Omar Garcia Harfuch said that the authorities would hand Oseguera’s remains over to his family. Moreover, no one knows yet where he will be buried, as it is essentially a family affair.

Neutralization of His Right-Hand Man

Likewise, authorities also announced that they killed his right-hand man, Hugo H., also known as “El Tuli”. He was subsequently killed in another town in Jalisco. Prior to his death, he directed his gangs to carry out road blockades, the burning of vehicles, and retaliatory attacks, of which about 25 National Guard have been killed.

Hugo “El Tuli” offered people money to burn the town.

El Tuli went berserk, as “he offered 20,000 pesos ($1,150) for every soldier who was killed,” Trevilla said. Like Oseguera. However, “El Tuli” died Sunday as he tried to flee. He was seen with an assault weapon, a pistol, and the equivalent of nearly $1.4 million. Hence, the authorities believe they are tools of his criminality found on him when he died, Trevilla added.

Nemesio’s Short Profile

Known by his moniker “El Mencho,” Nemesio Rubén Oseguera Cervantes (17 July 1966 – 22 February 2026) was a Mexican drug lord who led the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), an organised crime gang with its headquarters in Jalisco. At the time of his death, he was among the most wanted individuals in the United States and the most wanted individual in Mexico. For information that resulted in his arrest, the governments of the United States and Mexico were offering prizes of up to $15 million USD and $300 million MXN, respectively.

He was arrested multiple times in the US for drug related crime before his deportation back to Mexico.

Furthermore, Oseguera Cervantes was wanted for illegal firearm possession, involvement in organised crime, and drug trafficking. El Mencho was supposedly in charge of organising international drug trafficking activities. The CJNG rose to prominence as one of Mexico’s most powerful criminal organisations under his leadership.

Mexico Burns

Oseguera’s death unleashed a wave of violence across 20 out of Mexico’s 32 states. Consequently leading to hundreds of roadblocks and torchings of vehicles. On Monday, most of the country returned to calm. Consequently, the government deployed around 10,000 soldiers as a dissuasive measure. But people continued blockades in isolated parts of Jalisco and neighbouring Michoacán state. Furthermore, they need to urgently quell the situation as the FIFA World Cup comes up in the summer of 2026.
