The news from Alausa is unpleasant for former Governor Ambode, marking what seems to be the peak of his fate. Hence, Lagos State Governor Sanwo-Olu announced on Monday endorsing his deputy, Obafemi Hamzat, as his preferred 2027 governorship successor. The announcement followed a closed-door meeting at Lagos House, Marina. At the meeting, Hamzat formally declared his intention to contest the governorship seat before the State Executive Council and key party leaders.
Additionally, those present at the meeting also included members of the Governor’s Advisory Council (GAC). Also present were the former minister of state for defence Musiliu Obanikoro and Ganiyu Solomon, who also attended the meeting.

Unanimous Support from Stakeholders
Addressing journalists after the meeting, Sanwo-Olu said that the stakeholders present unanimously endorsed the decision. He praised Hamzat for preparing well and showing capability to lead Lagos State.
“We just received Mr Deputy, who had come with a very powerful delegation of our leaders in the state to inform us of his intention to contest the seat of the governorship position of the state,” the governor said. “It was unanimous with all of us to say that Mr Deputy Governor is a man who is fit and well-prepared for this job. He is a man who knows where all the rooms in the house are.”
Experience and Integrity Highlighted
Sanwo-Olu emphasised Hamzat’s experience and their working relationship over the past seven years. In addition, he noted Hamzat’s “integrity, loyalty, commitment, and support” as defining qualities.
“He is a man who has worked with me at the highest level of integrity, loyalty, commitment, and support, and so I feel personally honoured and privileged that he has given me this honour to inform me,” the governor added.
Acknowledging Presidential Influence
The governor expressed gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, crediting him for the discovery of both himself and Hamzat. Thus, his astute leadership is the basis for their strong collaboration.
“We thank our father, our leader, Mr President, who saw the vision… that long run is what is already being manifested here today,” Sanwo-Olu said.

The Tinubu’s Factor
President Bola Tinubu’s factor played a crucial role in selecting Lagos’ deputy governor because the president’s influence guided the decision. However, his endorsement boosted the candidate’s credibility across political circles. Moreover, Tinubu’s strategic vision aligned with Lagos’ developmental goals. Consequently, stakeholders rallied behind the nominee. This unity strengthened the candidate’s position during the selection process. Moreover, Tinubu’s political network proved indispensable in securing broad support. Ultimately, his backing ensured a smooth and decisive appointment. No doubt, the Tinubu factor remains a key element in shaping Lagos’ political leadership.
Hamzat Poised for Leadership
Sanwo-Olu described Hamzat as ready from day one to lead the state. “This is a deputy governor that is worth a governor from day one; this is a man that has been built for this job, and we believe that he deserves to be given a chance to go and run this state,” he stated.

Consultative Process and Broad Agreement
The governor further described the meeting as a consultative process involving party leaders and government officials. Moreover, he noted the endorsement followed broad consensus among stakeholders.
“It’s been a very warm family meeting, and at the end of the day, it was unanimous that Mr Deputy Governor is fit, ready, well-baked… for this job,” Sanwo-Olu concluded.
Ruling Party Unity Ahead of 2027 Elections
Consequently, this development signals an early alignment within the ruling All Progressives Congress in Lagos. Political activities are gradually gaining momentum ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Conclusion
In conclusion, the governor confidently endorsed the deputy governor candidate. He emphasised their strong partnership and shared vision. He urged all stakeholders to support the choice wholeheartedly. This endorsement marks a significant step toward continued progress and effective leadership in Lagos State.
