Tinubu Flags Off Major Infrastructure Projects Across Northern Nigeria

Lagos and Northern Nigeria, June 5, 2025 – President Bola Tinubu has reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to infrastructure development as the backbone of Nigeria’s economic growth by commissioning and flagging off several major road projects across Northern Nigeria and other regions. The President made these remarks during a series of commissioning ceremonies held in Lagos and northern states, emphasizing that infrastructure investments are critical to job creation, regional integration, and long-term competitiveness.

Among the key projects commissioned and flagged off are:

  • The reinforced concrete access road to the Lekki Deep Sea Port in Lagos, a vital corridor supporting Nigeria’s largest port and industrial hub.
  • The Kano–Kongolam Road (Section II: Kano–Kanwar–Danja–Hadejia), a 105 km stretch critical for connecting Kano, Jigawa, Bauchi, Yobe, and Borno states.
  • The Yakasai–Zalli Road and several other roads in Kano State, enhancing transportation and trade within the northwest region.
  • The dualisation of the Kano-Maiduguri Road, linking Kano, Jigawa, Bauchi, Yobe, and Borno States, which is essential for boosting commerce and security in the northeast.
  • Construction of the Kano Northern Bypass and Maiduguri Bypass Roads, aimed at easing traffic congestion and improving urban mobility.

President Tinubu highlighted the importance of these roads beyond their physical structures, describing them as investments in mobility, employment, and Nigeria’s economic future.

“These roads are more than concrete, steel, and asphalt. They are investments by your government in mobility, jobs, and Nigeria’s long-term economic competitiveness,” he said.

He also praised the Minister of Works, Engr. David Umahi, for his leadership in rescoping and advancing nationwide infrastructure projects, urging him to remain focused despite critics.

“I am very proud and honoured to have you in our team,” Tinubu remarked.

The President called for unified infrastructure approvals between federal and state governments to reduce bureaucratic delays and ensure cohesive planning. He appealed to state governors to collaborate closely with the Federal Ministry of Works and the Surveyor General to facilitate smooth project execution.

Broader Infrastructure Agenda

The projects are part of the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which prioritizes infrastructure as a catalyst for industrialization, economic development, and job creation. President Tinubu also commissioned the first phase of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, a 700 km corridor spanning Ogun, Ondo, Delta, Edo, Bayelsa, Rivers, Akwa Ibom, and Cross River states, constructed using durable continuously reinforced concrete pavement.

Other notable commissions include:

  • The Shendam Bridge in Plateau State and the Ilobu-Enrile road in Kwara and Osun states.
  • The Jimeta Bridge in Yola, Adamawa State.
  • Rehabilitation of the Enugu-Port Harcourt Road and the reconstruction of the collapsed Enugu Bridge.
  • Emergency repairs on the Eko Bridge in Lagos.

The President acknowledged private sector contributions from industry leaders such as Aliko Dangote, Abdulsamad Rabiu, and Tony Elumelu, highlighting partnerships that have accelerated infrastructure delivery.

Economic Impact and Future Outlook

Senate President Godswill Akpabio assured the President of continued legislative support to reposition Nigeria’s economy through infrastructure development. Governors from Lagos, Delta, Ogun, Edo, Bayelsa, Borno, Ekiti, Kogi, Ondo, Cross River, and Imo states attended the events, underscoring the national importance of the projects.

President Tinubu reiterated that the Federal Government will enforce urban planning laws strictly, warning developers against unauthorized constructions and emphasizing sustainability and local content in all projects.
