NBC and NIGCOMSAT Unveil Satellite-Driven Vision for Nigeria’s Digital Switchover
Abuja, May 30, 2025 – The National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) and Nigerian Communications Satellite Limited (NIGCOMSAT) have launched a groundbreaking satellite-powered initiative called “The Big Picture” to accelerate Nigeria’s Digital Switchover (DSO) from analogue to digital broadcasting. This project, aligned with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, leverages Nigeria’s sovereign satellite, NigComSat-1R, to deliver universal, affordable, and high-quality digital TV access across the entire country, including remote and underserved communities.
Key Features and Innovations
- Satellite-First Model: Unlike previous terrestrial-based approaches, the DSO now uses the NigComSat-1R satellite to beam Direct-to-Home (DTH) signals nationwide, covering 100% of Nigeria’s landmass instantly. This approach cuts deployment timelines by over 65% and bypasses the need for costly ground transmission towers.
- Immediate Access: Over 10 million Nigerian households with DVB-S2-compatible TVs or set-top boxes can access more than 100 free-to-air digital channels immediately, without purchasing new equipment.
- Hybrid Smart Set-Top Boxes: The project introduces next-generation internet-enabled hybrid devices combining satellite TV with streaming apps, voice search, parental controls, and an Electronic Program Guide (EPG) designed for Nigeria’s youth-majority population (60% under 25). These devices are available on near-zero interest payment plans through partnerships with financial firms like CREDICORP.
- Content Diversity and Local Production: Forty percent of channel slots are reserved for independent and regional producers, featuring educational programming, Nollywood films, sports, and local storytelling. Six new regional content hubs produce over 1,000 hours of local content monthly, supported by the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) and private studios.
- Real-Time Audience Analytics: In partnership with global analytics firm GARB, NBC will deploy real-time viewership measurement tools to help broadcasters and advertisers optimize content and advertising, projecting a 300% increase in ad revenue by 2026.
- Mobile Streaming: The Free TV App (available on Android and iOS) allows viewers to stream all channels on mobile devices, even with low bandwidth, catering to Nigeria’s mobile-first, youth-driven audience.
- Job Creation and Local Manufacturing: The initiative supports Nigeria’s “Buy-Nigeria” agenda by fostering local manufacturing of hybrid set-top boxes, expected to produce 5 million units annually and create over 20,000 jobs in assembly plants nationwide.
- Customer Support and Education: A multilingual call center, 15,000 trained technicians, and 2,000 Digital Ambassadors are deployed nationwide to educate communities and provide 24/7 support.
Strategic Importance and National Impact
The Big Picture project represents a paradigm shift in Nigeria’s broadcasting sector, moving from outdated terrestrial systems to a modern, scalable satellite-first infrastructure. This transition is expected to:
- Democratize access to information and entertainment for all Nigerians, including those in remote areas.
- Boost the creative economy by empowering local content creators and expanding audience reach.
- Enhance digital inclusion and economic growth through job creation and technology adoption.
- Position Nigeria as a leader in digital broadcasting innovation in Africa.
NBC Director-General Charles Ebuebu said,
“We’re not just digitizing TV. We’re democratizing access, empowering stories, and redefining how Nigerians connect to information and entertainment.”
NIGCOMSAT Managing Director Jane Nkechi Egerton-Idehen highlighted the importance of leveraging Nigeria’s satellite assets to ensure effective and inclusive digital broadcasting.
Background and Challenges Overcome
Nigeria’s DSO journey began in 2006 following an International Telecommunication Union (ITU) mandate but faced delays due to outdated policies, bureaucratic hurdles, and reliance on terrestrial transmission. The previous focus on Digital Terrestrial Television (DTT) limited coverage and excluded many rural communities.
This new satellite-first approach addresses these challenges by providing instant nationwide coverage, integrating internet streaming, and embracing hybrid technologies aligned with global best practices.
Future Outlook
The Big Picture is expected to catalyze Nigeria’s digital transformation, with nationwide rollout accelerating in the coming months. Complementary projects, such as the expansion of fiber optic infrastructure and the launch of additional satellites, will further enhance connectivity and digital services.
