Electoral Body Warns Public to Disregard Fake Online Reports
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially denied reports circulating online that it has fixed a date for the resumption of the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise, including related services such as transfer and replacement of lost Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs).
Fake Date Circulating on Social Media
In a statement released on May 4, 2025, INEC’s Chief Press Secretary, Rotimi Oyekanmi, clarified that the commission has not announced any date for the resumption of CVR activities. The commission urged the public to disregard an anonymous message falsely claiming that the CVR would resume on May 27, 2025. This statement was shared through INEC’s verified social media platforms, including its official X (formerly Twitter) account and Instagram page.
“The Independent National Electoral Commission wishes to inform the general public that it has not yet announced any date for the resumption of the Continuous Voter Registration, Transfer and Replacement of lost Permanent Voters’ Cards,” the statement read.
INEC’s Commitment to Official Communication
INEC reaffirmed its commitment to transparency and assured Nigerians that any official information regarding the resumption of voter registration will be communicated publicly and promptly through its verified channels. The commission warned that spreading or acting on unverified information could cause confusion and undermine the electoral process.
Importance of Continuous Voter Registration
Continuous Voter Registration is a vital process that allows eligible Nigerian citizens to register as new voters, update their details, transfer registration to a new location, or replace lost PVCs ahead of elections. INEC’s timely and accurate communication is essential to ensure the integrity of the electoral process and encourage active voter participation.
Public Advisory
The commission advised Nigerians to always verify electoral information through official INEC platforms and avoid sharing unconfirmed reports. INEC’s official website and social media accounts remain the only trusted sources for updates on voter registration and related services.
