AFCON Disrespect: Fury On Jamie Carragher!

Nigerian football legend Jay-Jay Okocha has slammed former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher for his recent disparaging remarks about African football. The Nigerian legend could not understand why he deliberately classified the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) as a no tournament.

Okocha’s comments came in response to Carragher’s suggestion that AFCON is not a major tournament. Consequently, his statement has sparked widespread outrage across the continent.

“YOU WON’T WANT YOUR SON TO BE LIKE CARRAGHER!”

Jay-Jay fired back, saying Carragher “can never appreciate African football or the talents that come from Africa.” Additionally, he feels his comments were totally uncharitable and below his status and exposure.

Furthermore, a former Super Eagles captain John Obi Mikel also weighed into the issue. More so, he described Carragher’s words as “disrespectful” and highlighting the tournament’s significance in inspiring young African footballers.

The controversy has sparked a heated debate about the respect and recognition accorded to African football globally. Conversely, African football fans and legendary players have joined forces to denounce Carragher’s comments.

Carragher’s remarks were made during a Sky Sports broadcast, where he questioned Salah’s chances of winning the 2025 Ballon d’Or. Furthermore, he hinged his position on his inability to win “major tournaments.”

However, his comments were swiftly challenged by fellow pundits Micah Richards and Daniel Sturridge, who reminded him of AFCON’s importance.

Several other African football legends have also spoken out against Carragher’s comments uncharitable comments. They include Nigerian football legend Segun Odegbami and South African football legend Lucas Radebe.

Odegbami described Carragher’s comments as “ignorant” and “disrespectful,” while Radebe said they were “unacceptable” and “demeaning.”

In terms of TV rights, CAF secured extensive global broadcasting agreements including Networks like SuperSport, SABC, and StarTimes, which aired all 52 matches across Africa.

The tournament’s commercial revenue and sponsorship saw a significant increase of 65%. Additionally, the tournament’s social media and digital engagement was impressive, with 2.1 billion.

AFCON’s viewership surpassed that of the Premier League, Champions League, and La Liga. It also outperformed the 2023 Rugby World Cup Final in terms of viewership.
