From Tuskegee’s campus band to global superstardom—the voice behind “Hello” and “We Are the World” shows no signs of slowing down.

The Tuskegee Roots That Started It All
Lionel Brockman Richie Jr. entered the world on June 20, 1949, in Tuskegee, Alabama—a town steeped in African American history and academic excellence. His grandfather, J.L. Richie, once shared a stage with the legendary W.C. Handy, planting musical seeds that would blossom decades later. Young Lionel grew up on the Tuskegee Institute campus, surrounded by educators and intellectuals. But his heart beat for music, not textbooks.
While pursuing a degree in economics at Tuskegee Institute, Richie found his true calling. He joined the Commodores, a campus band that would soon become one of the most successful funk and soul groups of the 1970s. Their sound was tight, their energy infectious. Songs like “Brick House” and “Easy” launched them into the stratosphere, with Richie’s distinctive tenor voice becoming the group’s signature.

Solo Stardom and Global Impact
In 1982, Richie stepped into the spotlight alone. His self-titled debut solo album was an instant phenomenon, featuring the timeless ballad “Truly.” But it was 1983’s Can’t Slow Down that cemented his place in music history. The album generated five top-ten singles and earned Richie two Grammy Awards, including Producer of the Year.
His genius extended beyond his own work. In 1985, Richie co-wrote “We Are the World” alongside Michael Jackson. The charity single sold over 20 million copies and became one of the best-selling records in history. His ability to craft songs that bridge genres and generations is virtually unmatched.

A Legacy That Keeps Growing
Richie has sold over 100 million records worldwide, placing him among the best-selling artists of all time. He’s a five-time Grammy winner and received the Songwriters Hall of Fame’s highest honour, the Johnny Mercer Award, in 2016. His music continues to resonate—whether through his judging role on American Idol or his ongoing tours that fill arenas across continents.

At 77, Richie’s output remains prolific. His daughters, Nicole and Sofia Richie, have carved their own paths in fashion and entertainment. Yet Lionel Richie’s voice—that warm, instantly recognisable croon—remains the heartbeat of his legacy. He has given the world love songs that feel deeply personal and anthems that unite millions.
Happy 77th Birthday, Lionel Richie. Your melodies will never fade.
