NNPP Leadership Crisis Deepens as Party Writes INEC

NNPP Writes INEC Over MoU Termination: Leadership Crisis Deepens

ABUJA — The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has formally written to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to clarify its position on the termination of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with a faction of the party. This development comes amid an ongoing leadership crisis that has plagued the NNPP since the 2023 general elections, raising questions about the party’s unity and future ahead of the 2027 elections.

Details of the MoU Termination

The NNPP, led by National Chairman Dr. Ajuji Ahmed, accused a rival faction of continuing to act under the party’s name despite a court ruling and the termination of their MoU. The party stated that it had severed ties with the splinter group led by Boniface Aniebonam, which had been parading itself as legitimate representatives of the NNPP.
“We have officially notified INEC that the MoU signed with this faction is no longer valid. Any activities conducted under this agreement are unauthorized and illegal,” Dr. Ahmed said during a press briefing in Abuja.

INEC’s Role Under Scrutiny

The NNPP also accused INEC of fueling internal divisions by allegedly recognizing and engaging with the splinter group. The party demanded that INEC cease all correspondence with unauthorized factions and respect court rulings affirming its leadership.
“INEC must remain neutral and avoid actions that could exacerbate our internal crisis,” said Ladipo Johnson, NNPP National Publicity Secretary.

Background: Leadership Crisis in NNPP

The NNPP has been embroiled in a leadership tussle since 2023, following accusations of anti-party activities against its former presidential candidate, Rabiu Kwankwaso. Key developments include:

  1. Court Injunctions: The Federal High Court in Abuja issued an injunction barring the Aniebonam-led faction from conducting official activities under the NNPP’s name.
  2. Logo Disputes: The party recently accused the splinter group of attempting to change its logo and colors without authorization.
  3. Factional Conventions: A controversial convention held by the rival faction in Lagos was declared illegal by the NNPP leadership.

Implications for 2027 Elections

  • Party Unity at Risk: The ongoing crisis threatens to weaken the NNPP’s position as a viable opposition party ahead of the 2027 general elections.
  • Legal Battles Loom: With multiple court cases pending, the party faces prolonged legal distractions that could impact its electoral preparations.
  • Public Perception: The infighting risks alienating supporters and eroding public confidence in the party’s ability to govern effectively.

Conclusion

The NNPP’s letter to INEC over the MoU termination highlights deepening divisions within one of Nigeria’s key opposition parties. As legal battles continue and accusations fly, observers are questioning whether the NNPP can resolve its internal disputes in time to mount a credible challenge in 2027.
