Political Tensions Simmer in Rivers State Following Supreme Court Rulings

PORT HARCOURT — Political tensions in Rivers State have intensified following a series of significant Supreme Court rulings that have reshaped the state’s governance landscape. On February 28, 2025, the court declared the October 5, 2024, local government elections invalid and reaffirmed Martin Amaewhule as the legitimate Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly.

Supreme Court Rulings and Their Impact

The Supreme Court’s unanimous decision mandates that:

  1. Local Government Elections Invalidated: The court ruled that the local government elections held in October did not comply with legal requirements, rendering them unconstitutional and void.
  2. Funding Restrictions: The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and the Accountant-General of the Federation are ordered to withhold all financial allocations to the Rivers State government until a valid budget is presented to the properly constituted assembly.
  3. Legitimacy of Amaewhule’s Leadership: The court recognized Amaewhule and his faction as the only valid lawmakers, dismissing claims made by Governor Siminalayi Fubara regarding defections among assembly members.

Justice Emmanuel Agim, who delivered the lead judgment, emphasized that allowing only a fraction of assembly members to operate undermines democratic principles. He stated, “A government cannot be said to exist without one of the three arms that make up the Government of a State under the 1999 Constitution.”

Governor Fubara’s Response

In light of the Supreme Court’s directives, Governor Fubara has invited the 27 lawmakers from Amaewhule’s faction for reconciliation talks. He acknowledged the need for unity and compliance with the court’s ruling but faces mounting pressure from opposition parties demanding his resignation or impeachment.

Fubara stated, “We must work together for the betterment of Rivers State. I am committed to ensuring that we adhere to the rule of law and foster an environment conducive to peace.”

Political Reactions and Calls for Stability

Former Governor Rufus Ada-George has called for calm among political actors, urging them to prioritize dialogue over confrontation. He warned that continued political strife could destabilize governance and disrupt essential services in Rivers State.

Ijaw leaders have also expressed concerns about potential unrest if the Supreme Court’s rulings are not implemented swiftly. They emphasized that adherence to judicial decisions is crucial for maintaining peace in the region.

Conclusion

As Rivers State navigates this complex political landscape, all eyes are on Governor Fubara’s next steps and whether he will comply fully with the Supreme Court’s rulings. The situation remains fluid, with stakeholders advocating for stability and constitutional governance in Nigeria’s oil-rich state.
