FBI Arrests Bobo Chicago over Alleged $2.8m Fraud

FBI Arrests Notorious Fraudster “Bobo Chicago” in Multi-Million-Dollar Scheme

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has arrested 25-year-old Nigerian national Oluyomi Omobolanle Bombata, better known by his alias “Bobo Chicago,” in connection with a sprawling fraud scheme amounting to $2.8 million. The arrest, which took place on November 20 in Illinois, marks another chapter in the U.S. government’s ongoing efforts to clamp down on sophisticated financial crimes orchestrated by international fraudsters.

From Lavish Lifestyle to Custody

Bobo Chicago, also known as “Bola Flexx” due to his extravagant displays of wealth, allegedly scammed companies and individuals by hacking into accounts and siphoning funds across the Eastern District of Oklahoma. Federal agents traced his fraudulent activities between June and October 2023, uncovering a money trail that exposed the depths of his criminal network.

Following a warrant issued in Oklahoma, Bombata was arrested in Chicago and transferred to Oklahoma to face five criminal charges: wire fraud, conspiracy to commit wire fraud, money laundering, conspiracy to commit money laundering, and unlawful monetary transactions.

The Money Trail

One of the FBI’s key discoveries was a transfer of $394,000 to the African Shrine in Las Vegas, raising questions about the venue’s financial practices. While investigators have yet to confirm the venue’s direct involvement, the owner, Wale Ogundana, is now under scrutiny to determine whether he knowingly facilitated or benefited from these illegal activities.

This isn’t the only peculiar transaction tied to Bobo Chicago. Federal agents also revealed that $300,000 in illicit funds was spent at a popular U.S. liquor store, implicating its owner in the investigation.

Arrest and Legal Proceedings

Judge Beth Jantz of the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois signed the paperwork for Bombata’s transfer to Oklahoma, where he will face trial. Despite flaunting immense wealth on social media, the fraudster claimed to lack financial resources and has been assigned a public defender, a move that legal experts suggest could be a strategy to avoid heavy fines.

A Familiar Pattern of Crime

Bombata’s arrest adds to the growing list of Nigerian nationals entangled in high-profile fraud cases in the United States. This includes infamous figures like Ramon Olorunwa Abbas (Hushpuppi) and Olalekan Ponle (Woodberry), both serving sentences for multi-million-dollar scams.

  • Hushpuppi, convicted in 2022, is serving an 11-year sentence for laundering millions stolen from businesses worldwide.
  • Woodberry received an eight-year sentence in July 2023 after a plea bargain reduced his charges.

The parallels between these cases highlight a concerning trend of cybercrime rings targeting U.S. companies, often using sophisticated phishing schemes to gain access to sensitive financial information.

Implications for the African Shrine

The African Shrine, a popular Las Vegas nightclub owned by Nigerian businessman Wale Ogundana, has come under intense scrutiny after being linked to proceeds from a multi-million-dollar fraud scheme orchestrated by Oluyomi Omobolanle Bombata, also known as Bobo Chicago. As part of their investigation, FBI agents uncovered that $394,000 of fraudulent funds were transferred to the nightclub between June and October 2023.

This revelation prompted Nevada state authorities to revoke the African Shrine’s operating license, effectively shutting down the venue. Known for its vibrant nightlife offerings, including music, dancing, and cultural events, the nightclub’s closure marks a significant blow to Ogundana’s business and the Las Vegas entertainment scene.

Beyond the license revocation, Ogundana has been barred from engaging in any nightlife-related ventures across Nevada. This includes running clubs, selling alcohol, or participating in similar businesses. The state’s decision reflects the severity of the allegations and underscores the risks of operating establishments linked to illicit activities, even inadvertently.

Federal agents have launched a separate criminal investigation into Ogundana to determine whether he knowingly participated in the fraud scheme or was an unwitting recipient of stolen funds. Ogundana has yet to comment publicly on the allegations, leaving the nightclub’s patrons and the wider community grappling with the implications.

The African Shrine’s closure and the ongoing investigation into Ogundana highlight the far-reaching consequences of financial crimes. As the FBI works to trace the extent of Bobo Chicago’s fraud network and identify accomplices, the fallout continues to reverberate through Las Vegas’s nightlife industry, which thrives on trust, transparency, and reputation.

Community and Industry Reactions

The arrest of Bombata has drawn mixed reactions. While some have expressed relief that another fraudster is being held accountable, others worry about the wider implications for Nigerian-owned businesses in the U.S.

“This is yet another black mark for the Nigerian community,” said one Las Vegas resident, who wished to remain anonymous. “It’s frustrating to see our hard-working people lumped in with these criminals because of a few bad actors.”

A Wake-Up Call for Financial Oversight

The case highlights the importance of stringent financial oversight in businesses, especially in an era of increasing cybercrime. For venues like the African Shrine, robust auditing processes and compliance with anti-money laundering laws are critical to maintaining integrity.

The Road Ahead

As Bobo Chicago awaits trial, the fallout from his arrest continues to ripple through the communities and industries he touched. For businesses linked to his crimes, the stakes are high. Not only must they prove their innocence, but they must also navigate the reputational challenges that come with such scrutiny.

For Bombata, the road ahead is grim. If convicted, he faces decades in prison, adding his name to the growing list of fraudsters who underestimated the resolve of U.S. law enforcement.
