PDP Holds Multiple NEC Meetings to Resolve Crisis Ahead of August Convention

PDP Vows to Rescue Party, Holds Four NEC Meetings Before August Convention

Abuja, May 28, 2025 – The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has intensified efforts to resolve its internal crises by convening four National Executive Committee (NEC) meetings ahead of its scheduled National Convention from August 28 to 30, 2025. The party’s leadership is determined to restore unity and reposition the PDP as a formidable opposition force ahead of the 2027 general elections.

NEC Meetings and Party Challenges

The 99th NEC meeting, held at the party’s Legacy House headquarters in Abuja, was marked by intense deliberations on the party’s ongoing leadership disputes, defections, and strategies for the upcoming elections. The NEC is one of the highest decision-making bodies within the PDP, comprising the National Working Committee, state governors, former presidents and vice presidents, Board of Trustees members, and other key stakeholders.

The meeting addressed critical issues including the validation of Senator Samuel Anyanwu as the party’s National Secretary by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), following a Supreme Court judgment. The party resolved to follow due process for Anyanwu’s removal, requiring a 21-day notice and proper procedures, with a follow-up NEC meeting scheduled for June 30 to finalize decisions.

Internal Crisis and Defections

The PDP continues to grapple with internal strife, particularly accusations by former Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike against Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde and Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah, whom he blames for sabotaging reconciliation efforts. Wike has withdrawn from peace agreements and vowed to continue his struggle for justice within the party.

Defections remain a major challenge, with several prominent members, including Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, leaving the PDP for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). Political analysts note that the PDP has lost significant ground in its traditional strongholds due to these defections.

Committees on National Convention and Zoning

The NEC ratified the composition of two key committees: the National Convention Committee, chaired by Governor Ahmadu Fintiri, and the Zoning Committee, chaired by Governor Douye Diri. These committees are tasked with organizing the August convention and determining zoning arrangements for national party offices.

Calls for Unity and Reconciliation

Senator Adolphus Wabara, Chairman of the PDP Board of Trustees, urged party members to embrace genuine reconciliation and healing to overcome divisions. He emphasized that no personal ambition or grievance should override the party’s collective interests and the hopes of Nigerians yearning for PDP’s return to power.

Governor Bala Mohammed, Chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum, acknowledged the pressures and intimidation faced by party leaders but affirmed their resolve to remain steadfast and committed to the party’s mandate.

Looking Ahead

The PDP’s concerted efforts through multiple NEC meetings and structured reconciliation processes signal a determined attempt to salvage the party from internal collapse. The August National Convention is expected to be a pivotal moment for the PDP to unify, reorganize, and present a credible challenge to the APC in the forthcoming elections.
