Nigerian National Shot Dead During Birthday Celebration in the Philippines Amid Violent Dispute

Laguna, Philippines, May 27, 2025 – A Nigerian national identified as Babylon was fatally shot by a fellow Nigerian during a birthday celebration in Los Baños, Laguna, Philippines. The tragic incident occurred early Wednesday at a private residence and is believed to have stemmed from a violent clash between rival groups attending the party.

Incident Details and Circumstances

The birthday party was hosted by a man named Obinna. During the event, Babylon and his group were downstairs, while another group stayed upstairs. When Babylon’s group attempted to leave, they went upstairs to inform the host. However, they were blocked by members of the rival group, leading to a heated argument.

The confrontation escalated when a member of the upstairs group rushed downstairs, and the dispute turned violent, culminating in gunfire. Babylon was shot and tried to flee but collapsed in a nearby bush where he later died from his injuries. A CCTV clip reviewed by reporters showed Babylon being shot as others fled the scene in panic.

Aftermath and Investigation

The shooter escaped before police arrived at the scene. Philippine authorities are investigating the incident, which is believed to be cult-related. Babylon resided in Manila and had traveled to Laguna for the celebration. His body remains unclaimed as efforts continue to contact his family in Nigeria.

An associate of the deceased revealed that Babylon had a wife and children back home. The Philippine police have not yet made any arrests but are pursuing leads to bring the perpetrator to justice.

Context and Community Reaction

This incident adds to growing concerns about violent clashes involving Nigerian nationals abroad, particularly in the Philippines, where previous cases of violence have been reported. The Nigerian expatriate community and Philippine authorities are closely monitoring the investigation.
