Explosion Near Mogadishu Barracks in Abuja Kills Suspected Suicide Bomber, Injures One
Abuja, May 26, 2025 – An explosion rocked a bus stop opposite the Nigerian Army’s Mogadishu Barracks, also known as Abacha Cantonment, in Abuja’s Federal Capital Territory on Monday afternoon. The blast killed a suspected suicide bomber and injured one other person, prompting a swift response and investigation by security agencies.
Incident Details
The explosion occurred around 2:50 PM local time at a busy bus terminal along the Mararaba-Nyanya bypass, adjacent to the military barracks which houses personnel from the Nigerian Army, Air Force, and Navy. Eyewitnesses reported a loud blast caused by an improvised explosive device (IED) concealed in a rubber can carried by the deceased.
The Nigerian Army confirmed the incident via its official X (formerly Twitter) handle, stating:
“Explosion at bus stop opposite Mogadishu Cantonment Abuja. Situation under control. Details later.”
A military source revealed that the suspected suicide bomber was intercepted atop the bridge linking Mogadishu Barracks and Guzape District, coming from the Nyanya Mararaba axis. The explosive detonated prematurely, killing the bomber on the spot. Two other persons sustained injuries during the incident, with one male victim rushed to the National Hospital in Abuja for medical attention.
Security Response and Investigation
The Federal Capital Territory Police Command cordoned off the scene immediately after the blast, deploying officers from the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Unit to secure the area and conduct forensic analysis. The police have launched a comprehensive investigation to determine the exact cause and nature of the explosion.
The Department of State Services (DSS), Nigerian Army, police, and National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) are coordinating efforts to ensure public safety and prevent further incidents.

The U.S. Embassy in Abuja issued a security alert advising U.S. citizens to avoid the area, remain vigilant, and monitor local media for updates. The embassy also urged residents to review personal security plans and carry proper identification.
Abuja has witnessed several terror attacks in the past, including the 2011 suicide bombing of the United Nations headquarters and multiple bombings in the Nyanya area. The Mogadishu Barracks is located about five kilometers from the presidential villa, making it a sensitive security location.
