Explosion Rocks Near Mogadishu Barracks in Abuja, Security Agencies Investigate

Abuja, May 26, 2025 – An explosion occurred on Monday afternoon at a bus stop opposite the Nigerian Army’s Mogadishu Barracks, also known as Abacha Cantonment, in Abuja. The blast has caused panic among commuters and residents, prompting a swift response from multiple security agencies who have launched a thorough investigation.

Details of the Incident

The explosion took place around 2:50 PM along the Mararaba-Nyanya bypass, near the entrance to the Mogadishu Barracks, which houses personnel from the Nigerian Army, Air Force, and Navy. The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command confirmed the incident, stating that the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Unit was immediately deployed to the scene to secure the area and conduct forensic analysis.

Eyewitnesses reported hearing a loud bang that caused chaos at the busy bus terminal. One male victim, believed to be a suspected suicide bomber, was killed by an explosive device contained in a rubber canister. Another individual sustained injuries and was promptly taken to a nearby hospital for medical attention.

Security Response and Investigation

The Nigerian Army assured the public that the situation was under control shortly after the blast. Security agencies including the Nigerian Police, Department of State Services (DSS), and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) are collaborating on the investigation.

Authorities have cordoned off the area to ensure public safety while forensic experts examine the scene to determine the exact cause and nature of the explosion. The police have urged residents to remain calm and continue their daily activities without fear.

Official Advisories

The U.S. Embassy in Abuja issued a security alert advising U.S. citizens and residents to avoid the area and stay vigilant. The embassy urged people to monitor local media for updates, be aware of their surroundings, keep cell phones charged, and carry proper identification.

Context and Previous Incidents

Suicide bombings and terror attacks, though infrequent, have previously targeted strategic locations in Abuja. Notably, in 2011, a suicide car bombing at the United Nations headquarters in Abuja killed at least 18 people.

The recent explosion underscores ongoing security challenges in Nigeria’s Federal Capital Territory amid heightened vigilance by security forces.
