South-East Leaders Pledge Support for President Tinubu’s 2027 Re-election Bid
Abuja/Umuahia, May 21, 2025 – Leaders from the South-East geopolitical zone of Nigeria have publicly pledged their support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election in the 2027 general elections, signaling a major political endorsement from the region traditionally seen as politically diverse.
Governors’ Unified Backing
Minister of Works and former Ebonyi State Governor, Senator Dave Umahi, stated unequivocally that all five South-East governors, regardless of their political party affiliations, are united in supporting President Tinubu’s 2027 bid. Speaking in a recent interview, Umahi highlighted the region’s increasing federal attention and infrastructure development under Tinubu’s administration. He called on former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi to join the South-East governors in working with President Tinubu for the unity and prosperity of Nigeria.
“Leadership is not about self—it’s about the people. If someone else is already doing what you would have done for your people, support them,” Umahi said, urging collective endorsement of Tinubu.
Traditional Rulers’ Commitment
Traditional rulers across Igbo land, operating under the Ndi Igbo Progressive Traditional Rulers Council and led by HRM Eze Nnamdi Oforegbu of Abia State, pledged to deliver at least 70 percent of the South-East’s votes to Tinubu in 2027. During a courtesy visit to Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu, the monarchs expressed gratitude for the establishment of the South East Development Commission (SEDC), which they believe will accelerate infrastructural growth in the region.
Eze Oforegbu said,
“We are grateful to President Bola Tinubu for appointing our sons and brothers as pioneer heads of the SEDC. We assure Mr. President of at least 70 percent of our votes in the next election.”
Deputy Speaker Kalu praised Tinubu’s inclusive leadership and strategic appointments, noting that the President has elevated the South-East through key positions such as the Deputy Speakership and ministerial appointments. He encouraged the monarchs to mobilize voters effectively, emphasizing the importance of votes as investments in the region’s future.
Political Support Groups and Elders
The South-East Elders Alliance and other political support groups have also declared their backing for Tinubu’s re-election, citing the region’s tangible benefits under his administration. They called on the President to continue efforts to stabilize the economy, reduce inflation, and consider constitutional amendments for state creation.
Niger Delta Coalition Joins Support
Adding to the momentum, the Coalition of Niger Deltans for Equity and Justice (CNDEJ) has pledged support for Tinubu’s second term, citing achievements in oil and gas reforms, foreign exchange stability, and local government autonomy.
