Tinubu Reaffirms Nigeria’s Commitment to Peace at Vatican

Nigeria Reaffirms Commitment to Global Peace and Interfaith Dialogue at Vatican

Rome, May 18, 2025 – President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to global peace, unity, and interfaith dialogue during his historic visit to the Vatican for the inauguration of Pope Leo XIV, the 267th Bishop of Rome. The solemn ceremony, held at St. Peter’s Square, brought together world leaders and dignitaries, underscoring the importance of religious harmony and cooperation in addressing global challenges.

Tinubu’s Message of Unity in Diversity

Speaking to reporters after the inauguration Mass, President Tinubu emphasized that Nigeria’s strength lies in its diversity and that unity remains a “work in progress” vital for the country’s stability and development. He stated,

“We have to continue to work on it-it’s a work in progress for the sake of our country and the continent as a whole.”

Tinubu, a Muslim attending a Catholic event, highlighted the symbolic importance of his presence as a demonstration of Nigeria’s religious tolerance and commitment to interfaith respect.

Engagement with Catholic Leaders and Political Figures

Following the Mass, Tinubu met with members of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria (CBCN), including Archbishop Lucius Ugorji, Archbishop Ignatius Kaigama, Archbishop Alfred Martins, and Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah. The bishops thanked Tinubu for facilitating their visits to the Vatican, first for the funeral of Pope Francis and now for the installation of Pope Leo XIV, signaling a new era of stronger church-state engagement.

A notable moment was the warm and light-hearted encounter between Tinubu and Nigerian political rivals-Labour Party leader Peter Obi and former Ekiti State Governor Kayode Fayemi-at the Vatican. The meeting was widely seen as a positive sign for Nigeria’s political climate, promoting unity beyond partisan divides.

Symbol of Religious Tolerance and Global Peace

Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, described Tinubu’s attendance as “very symbolic,” reflecting solidarity with Nigeria’s Christian community and affirming the country’s commitment to peace not only within Africa but globally.

Senior Special Assistant to the President on Foreign Affairs and Protocol, Ademola Oshodi, noted that Tinubu’s presence counters stereotypes about religious intolerance in Nigeria, emphasizing the country’s dedication to religious freedom and inclusion.

Pope Leo XIV’s Vision

Pope Leo XIV, formerly Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, used his inaugural homily to call for the Church to be a force for peace, justice, and compassion worldwide. He urged Catholics to embrace unity that respects diversity and to extend love and solidarity to marginalized communities.

Outlook

President Tinubu is expected to return to Abuja on May 20, 2025, bringing back a renewed message of unity, tolerance, and Nigeria’s active role in promoting global peace and interfaith dialogue.
