Security Forces Kill Two Gunmen in Anambra After Deadly Checkpoint Attack

Isuofia, Aguata LGA, Anambra State, May 16, 2025 – Two suspected gunmen were killed by joint security operatives during a fierce gun battle at a checkpoint in Isuofia community, Aguata Local Government Area of Anambra State. The attack, which occurred on the evening of May 15, also resulted in the death of one police officer and the burning of a security vehicle.

Incident Details

According to the Anambra State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, the gunmen, reportedly in large numbers, laid siege to the area from nearby bushes before launching a surprise assault on the checkpoint. The attackers opened fire and set ablaze one of the security operational vehicles, a Toyota Sienna, which they later abandoned as they fled the scene.

The joint security team, comprising police and other security operatives, responded with superior firepower, killing two of the attackers. Unfortunately, one security operative was fatally wounded during the gun duel. The attackers retreated into the surrounding bushes, prompting intensified patrols and manhunts by security forces to apprehend the fleeing suspects.

Official Response and Community Impact

Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, condemned the attack, describing it as a test of the collective resolve of the people of Anambra to collaborate with security agencies in eradicating criminal elements. He assured residents that efforts are ongoing to track down the remaining assailants and restore lasting peace in the area.

Calm has since returned to Isuofia, with increased security presence deployed to prevent further attacks and reassure the community.

This attack is part of a series of violent incidents in Anambra and the Southeast region, where armed groups have been responsible for frequent assaults on security personnel and civilians. Authorities have linked some attacks to outlawed groups, while Amnesty International has raised concerns over escalating violence and called for thorough investigations.
