Operation Hadin Kai Flags Boko Haram’s Use of Armed Drones, Intensifies Counterterrorism Efforts in Borno

Maiduguri, May 15, 2025 – The Nigerian Army’s Operation Hadin Kai has confirmed a worrying escalation in Boko Haram and ISWAP insurgents’ tactics with the deployment of armed drones in attacks across Borno State. Major General Abdulsalam Abubakar, Theatre Commander of Operation Hadin Kai, disclosed during a briefing in Maiduguri that the insurgents have been using weaponised drones similar to those deployed in conflict zones like Israel and Ukraine since November 2024, posing significant detection and defense challenges.

Escalation of Drone Warfare

The insurgents’ use of armed drones marks a tactical evolution, enabling multi-pronged attacks on isolated and vulnerable military deployments. These drones, often modified commercial quadcopters loaded with locally manufactured grenades or explosives, are difficult to detect with conventional radar systems, complicating Nigerian military countermeasures.

ISWAP, a splinter group of Boko Haram affiliated with the Islamic State, has also incorporated advanced technology such as satellite internet and artificial intelligence to enhance their operations and propaganda.

Recent Attacks and Military Response

Over the past months, Boko Haram and ISWAP have launched coordinated assaults on military bases in Marte, Dikwa, Rann, and Gajiram, with drones playing a key role in reconnaissance and attacks. While most attacks were repelled, the assault on Rann resulted in the loss of four soldiers. The military has responded with intensified aerial reconnaissance and clearance operations, including successful raids in the Sambisa Forest that neutralized several terrorists and destroyed weapons caches.

The Chief of Army Staff, Lt. General Olufemi Oluyede, has directed a strategic reassessment of deployments and operations to counter the insurgents’ evolving tactics. Major General Abubakar, who assumed command three weeks ago, emphasized ongoing efforts to reorganize forces and boost troop morale through improved welfare packages.

Regional and Security Implications

Governor Babagana Umara Zulum of Borno has expressed deep concern over the resurgence of insurgent activities, warning that terrorists are regaining ground and threatening regional stability. He called for enhanced military capabilities, including the deployment of advanced technologies like drones, to effectively combat the insurgency.

The insurgents’ access to advanced weaponry and drone technology is attributed to their control of smuggling routes, arms trafficking, and looting of military equipment in the Sahel region. Experts warn that the integration of drone warfare by Boko Haram and ISWAP reflects a broader global trend of militant groups adopting unmanned systems to increase offensive capabilities while reducing risks to personnel.

Call for National Support and Adaptation

General Abubakar urged Nigerians to support the military by remaining vigilant and cooperating with security agencies, stressing that the fight against terrorism is a collective responsibility. He reiterated the military’s resolve to defeat terrorism and restore peace, despite the vast and complex theatre of operations covering over 150,000 square kilometers.

Security analysts recommend urgent investment in counter-drone technologies such as jamming devices, radar systems, and electronic warfare tools to detect and neutralize hostile drones. They also emphasize the need for a comprehensive counterterrorism strategy integrating technological advancements, enhanced military readiness, and regional cooperation.
