Disunited Opposition Boosts Tinubu’s 2027 Re-election Bid

Disunited Opposition Paves Way for Tinubu’s 2027 Victory, APGA Endorses Incumbent

Abuja, May 9, 2025 – With less than two years to the 2027 presidential election, Nigeria’s opposition parties remain fragmented and disorganized, significantly boosting President Bola Tinubu’s prospects for a second term. The All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) has officially adopted Tinubu as its presidential candidate, signaling growing support from key political allies and weakening the opposition’s chances.

APGA’s Endorsement Strengthens Tinubu’s Position

Governor Charles Soludo of Anambra State announced on May 8 that APGA has formally endorsed President Tinubu for the 2027 election, citing shared progressive ideologies between APGA and Tinubu’s All Progressives Congress (APC). Soludo emphasized that the two parties will collaborate closely in the upcoming election, reinforcing Tinubu’s political coalition.

“Progressives are working together,” Soludo declared during a reception in Awka, Anambra State, where Tinubu was commissioning projects.

APGA’s endorsement follows its historical pattern of supporting sitting presidents aligned with its ideological stance, as seen in 2011 when it backed then-President Goodluck Jonathan.

Opposition’s Fragmentation Undermines Electoral Prospects

Political analysts and insiders warn that the opposition’s failure to unify behind a single candidate is handing a strategic advantage to Tinubu. Despite calls for coalition-building among opposition parties, including the Labour Party and the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), internal disputes and competing ambitions have stalled meaningful alliances.

A recent analysis by THISDAYLIVE highlights the complex regional and ethnic considerations complicating opposition unity. The north-south power dynamics, with southern dominance in the PDP governorships and northern political interests, create hurdles for a cohesive opposition front.

Tinubu’s Strategic Moves in Key States

President Tinubu has been actively consolidating support in pivotal states such as Kano, leveraging political alliances and grassroots mobilization to fortify his base ahead of 2027. His administration’s policy initiatives and political outreach have further solidified his standing among progressive parties and influential regional actors.

Opposition Voices and Predictions

While some opposition figures remain hopeful about forming coalitions, others acknowledge the uphill battle. Political commentator Hakeem Baba Ahmed recently noted that without a united front, Tinubu’s re-election is highly probable.

Former President Goodluck Jonathan, often speculated to have endorsed Tinubu’s victory, has publicly denied making such statements, but the political landscape suggests a strong incumbent advantage.

Outlook for 2027

With APGA’s endorsement and the opposition’s ongoing disunity, President Tinubu appears positioned for a relatively smooth path to re-election in 2027. The opposition’s challenge will be to overcome internal divisions and present a credible alternative capable of mobilizing diverse voter blocs across Nigeria’s complex political terrain.
