Late Adebanjo Praised for Obi’s 2023 Victory in Lagos: Labour Party Credits Him for Electoral Success

ABUJA — The National Chairman of the Labour Party, Julius Abure, has paid tribute to the late leader of Afenifere, Pa Ayo Adebanjo, crediting him for the party’s significant electoral success in Lagos during the 2023 presidential election. In a statement issued on April 1, 2025, Abure acknowledged Adebanjo’s instrumental role in helping Labour Party candidate Peter Obi win in Lagos, a stronghold of President Bola Tinubu.

Adebanjo’s Contribution

Adebanjo, a prominent figure in Yoruba socio-political circles, was a staunch supporter of Obi’s candidacy. He endorsed Obi in July 2022, citing the need for a non-Christian, non-northerner to lead Nigeria for ethnic and religious balance. Abure noted that Adebanjo’s interventions helped resolve internal crises within the Labour Party, particularly in Lagos, where Obi won nine local government areas: Ajeromi-Ifelodun, Amuwo-Odofin, Eti-Osa, Ikeja, Kosofe, Oshodi-Isolo, Somolu, Ojo, and Alimosho.

Electoral Upset in Lagos

In the February 27, 2023, presidential election, Obi polled 575,735 votes to defeat Tinubu, who secured 573,001 votes in Lagos. Although Obi did not win the national election, his victory in Lagos was seen as a significant upset, given Tinubu’s influence in the state.

Abure’s Tribute

Abure praised Adebanjo for his leadership and commitment to democracy, stating that his efforts not only ensured peace within the Labour Party but also propelled the party to achieve massive successes in the 2023 elections. He emphasized that Adebanjo’s legacy continues to inspire the party, particularly in Lagos, which has become a stronghold for the Labour Party.

Adebanjo’s Endorsement of Obi

Adebanjo first declared support for Obi in July 2022, citing Obi’s ability to rule independently without government influence. He believed Obi would not disappoint Nigerians and would bring about much-needed change. Obi himself has praised Adebanjo for shaping his perception of Nigeria and for his unwavering commitment to fairness and justice.

Public Reaction

  • Social Media: Nigerians on social media have praised Adebanjo’s courage and foresight in supporting Obi, with many acknowledging his impact on the election outcome in Lagos.
  • Political Leaders: Other political leaders have also commended Adebanjo’s contributions to Nigerian politics, highlighting his unwavering commitment to democratic principles.
