Peter Obi Slams NASS Over Rivers Emergency Rule

Peter Obi Condemns NASS for Approving Rivers Emergency Rule: “A Dangerous Precedent for Democracy”

ABUJA — Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has strongly criticized the National Assembly for approving President Bola Tinubu’s controversial declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State. Obi described the move as unconstitutional, reckless, and a dangerous overreach that threatens Nigeria’s democratic foundations.

Obi’s Criticism of Tinubu’s Emergency Declaration

Speaking in a statement posted on his X (formerly Twitter) handle on March 19, 2025, Obi condemned the removal of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy, and state lawmakers as part of the emergency rule. He argued that the political situation in Rivers State does not justify such an extreme measure and labeled it a biased interpretation of Section 305(1) of the 1999 Constitution.

“The declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State is not just reckless—it is a clear attempt to return us to a state of nature and tighten its grip on power at all costs,” Obi stated.
He added that the decision undermines 26 years of democratic progress and sets a dangerous precedent for governance in Nigeria.

Obi’s Appeal to the National Assembly

Obi expressed disappointment with the National Assembly for ratifying the emergency rule, accusing lawmakers of failing to protect democratic norms. He called on all stakeholders to resist what he described as an unconstitutional action:
“The National Assembly should not have upheld this decision. It constitutes an unconstitutional overreach that fosters impunity and undermines the separation of powers.”

Key Points from Obi’s Statement

  1. Violation of Rule of Law: Obi argued that removing an elected governor under emergency rule is unconstitutional and does not align with democratic principles.
  2. Dangerous Precedent: He warned that such actions could foster a culture of impunity, erode trust in governance, and destabilize Nigeria’s federal system.
  3. Call for Vigilance: Obi urged Nigerians to remain vigilant against authoritarian tendencies, stating that “a new Nigeria is possible only if we defend our democracy.”

Public Reaction and Political Fallout

Obi’s statement has sparked widespread debate on social media and among political analysts:

  • Many Nigerians have praised his stance as a defense of democracy.
  • Critics argue that his comments are politically motivated and fail to address the security concerns Tinubu cited as justification for the emergency rule.

Meanwhile, opposition parties, including the PDP, have joined Obi in condemning the emergency rule as an attack on democracy.

Conclusion: A Divided Nation

Peter Obi’s condemnation highlights growing divisions over Tinubu’s approach to governance and raises critical questions about the balance of power between federal and state governments. As Rivers State enters this unprecedented period, calls for judicial review and public accountability are expected to intensify.
