In a significant move to promote capacity building and empowerment among youths within and outside Lagos. The Nigerian Institute of Shipping (NIS), a foremost shipping institute in Nigeria, recently signed a MoU. The signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) is with the Apapa Local Government Area of Lagos State. This development was announced by the National President, Dr. Martin Enebeli, during its hybrid Annual General Meeting (AGM) held recently.
The MoU is designed to provide training and empowerment programs for youths in the Apapa community. The MoU between the two parties is strategically focusing on maritime and transportation courses. According to Dr. Enebeli, the training will commence in the first quarter of 2025 and will cover areas such as port administration and freight forwarding. The Institute has secured a training center and is finalising arrangements for the program’s commencement.
This initiative is part of NIS’s efforts in promoting capacity building and empowerment among youths. The area of engagement is primarily and particularly in the maritime sector. As noted by Dr. Enebeli, “The collaboration with Apapa Local Government is focused on skill acquisition in shipping.”
He further stated unequivocally about the timeline and commencement of the programme. He said, “We are almost putting the finishing touches on the arrangement, which will benefit the Institute and the community.”
In another significant development, Dr. Enebeli was re-elected for a second term as National President of NIS. His reelection was unanimous, with members and executives of the institute expressing confidence in his leadership. His first term was marked by significant silent achievements, including the approval of NIS to run as a monotechnic. Another plus for the Enebeli’s administration is the near passage of the Institute’s charter bill at the Senate.
The NIS has also made significant progress in promoting its certificates globally. Recently, the Ghana Ports and Harbour Authority and the Regional Maritime University approved its certificates. These certificates are evaluated in the USA and are equivalent to BSc qualifications. The reelected executives of NIS, based on proven works and achievements, include Dr. Martin C. Enebeli as national president. The Vice Presidents are Hon. Oluwasegun Elufioye-Johnson and the charismatic Anyika Chizoba (Mrs.). Other members of the executives are the pragmatic Madam Juliana Saka (Mrs.), who returned as National Secretary. Dr. Kehinde Oshigbo as Assistant National Secretary, Dr. Taiwo Oshigbo as Financial Secretary, and Capt. Tajudeen Alao as the National Treasurer. Concluding the list is Dr. Nnamdi Eronini, who was also returned as the national publicity secretary.
In conclusion, the partnership between NIS, which has been established since 1983, and Apapa LGA is a welcome development. It’s a significant milestone and a plus to all the stakeholders in the maritime industry. The MoU is draughted towards promoting capacity building and empowerment among youths in the maritime sector. With Dr. Enebeli’s re-election, the Institute is poised to continue its progress and achievements in the years to come.
