Sailors’ Night: A Magical Evening of Camaraderie and Celebration

The Merchant Seafarers Association of Nigeria (MESAN) recently hosted a spectacular Sailors’ Night, an annual event that brings together maritime professionals, stakeholders, and enthusiasts for an evening of merriment and networking. Consequently, this event showcased the association’s commitment to fostering unity, discipline, and excellence within the maritime industry. Furthermore, the event was a resounding success, thanks to the visionary leadership of U.S-trained Maritime and Security expert, Capt. Alfred Oniye (Professor of Maritime Security).

A Night to Remember

Held on the 20th of December, 2024, at the recently renovated Mission to Seafarers House, the Sailors’ Night was a colorful and lively celebration that featured a rich blend of music, dance, and the graduation ceremony of City University students. In addition, the event attracted a diverse gathering of dignitaries, including government official representatives, industry leaders, and representatives from various maritime organizations and a plethora of seasoned seafarers. Notably, the event provided a platform for networking and collaboration among maritime stakeholders.

Unity and Cooperation in the Maritime Industry

Capt. Oniye, in his address, emphasized the importance of unity and cooperation among maritime stakeholders, highlighting MESAN’s role in promoting the welfare, discipline, and interests of its members. Moreover, he stressed that the maritime industry is a critical component of the national economy and that it is essential for stakeholders to work together to address the challenges facing the industry. In this regard, MESAN has been at the forefront of promoting unity and cooperation among maritime stakeholders.

Award Presentation and Testimonies

The evening’s festivities included an award presentation to Captain William Ogunsakin as Grand Master “Supervisory Captain.” He boasts 30 years of sailing experience and is also a proud alumnus of the Federal College of Fisheries and Marine Technology, Victoria Island, aka Oceanography. Furthermore, the night saw special speeches and testimonies to the dexterous capacity and capabilities of Captain Ogunsakin, who is rounding up his PhD program. Capt. Segun Akanbi, also an alumnus of Oceanography, attested to the great works of Capt. Ogunsakin, saying, “…I was still a cadet when Baba was already a Captain.” The Chairman organizing committee of the event; Capt. (Dr.) Sampson Chima in his vote of thanks expressed his sincere appreciation and gratitude to everyone that made the ticket-free event a momentous success.

Merchant marine Training academy (MMTA) has been at the forefront of promoting maritime education in Nigeria. The Academy has been working closely with maritime institutions to provide training and development opportunities for seafarers. Furthermore, the graduation ceremony of City University students, which was held during the Sailors’ Night, was a testament to MMTA’s commitment to promoting maritime education.
